Plant species
Plant species are the most basic unit of classification within the plant kingdom. Each species is a unique group of plants that share common characteristics and are capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring. The concept of plant species is important in understanding plant diversity, ecology, and conservation.
Plants are classified within a hierarchical structure that includes kingdom (Plantae), division (or phylum), class, order, family, genus, and species. This classification helps in organizing and identifying plants systematically.
In botanical terms, a species is the second part of a plant's scientific name (binomial nomenclature), which includes the genus name followed by the species identifier. For example, in Rosa rubiginosa, Rosa is the genus, and rubiginosa is the species.
