Plant species

Plant species are the most basic unit of classification within the plant kingdom. Each species is a unique group of plants that share common characteristics and are capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring. Plants are classified within a hierarchical structure that includes kingdom (Plantae), division (or phylum), class, order, family, genus, and species. This classification helps in organizing and identifying plants systematically.

In botanical terms, a species is the second part of a plant's scientific name (binomial nomenclature), which includes the genus name followed by the species identifier. For example, in Rosa rubiginosa, Rosa is the genus, and rubiginosa is the species.
