How to keep a secret? Never spill it to anyone else.

We get to see an example of how things can go wrong in the TV show The Bing Bang Theory. In one of the scenes, Penny told Sheldon something and then asked him not to say it to Leonard.

Sheldon was surprised, “You are asking me to keep a secret?”

Penny gave him an obvious affirmative expression while replying Yes.

Sheldon said, “I am sorry, but you would have had to express that desire before revealing the secret, so that I could choose whether or not I wanted to accept the covenant of secret keeping. You can’t impose a secret on an ex-post facto basis.”

Penny looked shocked. Or perhaps more precisely, puzzled. She said, “What?”

Sheldon: “Secret keeping is a complicated endeavor.”

What should Penny say now? She tried to knock some sympathy into Sheldon. She said, “Okay, look, if Leonard finds out that I lied, I will definitely die of embarrassment.”

It didn’t work. Sheldon was quite stubborn, or to put it better, he was determined to be himself and be an honest person.

Finally, Penny begged him, “Sheldon, please. Look, I’m asking you as a friend.”

Oops, she never expected to hear this, “When do we become friends?” asked Sheldon.

Poor Penny! She couldn’t convince Sheldon. Everything she tried failed.

But she got to know Sheldon better now and learned a lesson about secret keeping from Sheldon.
